What is music today?
With appearance of musical Avant-garde in 20th century and such styles as atonality, dodecaphony, indeterminancy,
happening our conceptualization of music changed substantially. Musical structures which determined the language of
classical music collapsed. New stylistic directions were instrumental in expansion of music conception.It obtained epochal
determination (modern), moving away from classical (music of 17-19th century) and age-old music (music of ancient and medieval Europe).
There is a specific and stylistic variety of music in 20th century. Conceptualizations appear of different "musics", engulfing the more or less
wide circle of the existing today musical phenomena:
Classic (or serious) - professional musical compositions, born in the culture of Europe mainly from New time (border 16-17 century) and in Middle ages;
Popular - mass consumed, mainly song-like dancing musical genres;
Non-european - music of those nations (East), whose culture differs from the culture of westeuropian civilization;
Ethnic (and traditional) - folk-lore (and orally-professional musical phenomena of different nations), underlining the identity of ethnos,
nation and tribe (see FOLK MUSIC).
Pop-music (or easy) - music that has an entertaining character, intended for rest;
Jazz - professional performing traditions of the American Blacks, based on the synthesis of the African and European musical elements,
caught up by Europeans.
Fate - music of small vocally-instrumental groups of young people, which differs with an obligatory presence of shock and elektro-musical instruments (guitars).
Avant-guarde (experimental) - general name of new direction in professional composer's creativity of 20 century.
Alternative - new musical compositions or executions (voice presentations, "performanses"), that is unlike to all kinds of music today.
